Comfort Food

When I went home for reading week, a good old roast was at the top of my priorities.

On a pretty rainy and otherwise miserable Sunday, we made our way down to the Swan Inn in Denham for some traditional pub food.

Whilst perusing the menu, there was one thing that really called out to me.

Calamari with bacon salt.

Yes, bacon salt.

That is something I've only seen on Man Vs Food but if it's now made it's way onto British menus, I'm so okay with that.

My sister chose the red pesto houmous with crudités and flatbreads.

I obviously chose the crispy squid which was seriously, seriously good.

I would happily go back just to eat this, although I couldn't finish it all because the bacon salt was pretty intense.

Dad opted for the bubble and squeak with poached eggs and bacon.

It was more of an eggs benedict with a hash brown than a traditional bubble and squeak but he enjoyed it nonetheless.

It feels like I haven't had a roast in forever. Our oven at uni isn't really up to much and most of the time quick food wins over comfort food.

Mum and I both got the roast chicken with all the trimmings which more than satisfied my roast-cravings.

The roast beef was dad's meal of choice.

I definitely had a bit of Yorkshire pudding envy when this was put on the table.

Chez had been pretty jealous of my starter, so chose the calamari for her main course with a side of fries.

One of the good things about the Swan is that dogs are allowed in the bar area.

Sammo was pretty excited about the whole affair and spent the entire meal being adored by fellow diners.

What a tart.

Despite all of that food there was obviously still room in my belly for pudding.

Does anyone else absolutely have to have something sweet after a savoury meal?

My mum and sister shared the white chocolate mousse with berries and lady fingers.

They weren't particularly impressed as it wasn't bubbly at all and didn't taste of much, although you can't deny that it looked pretty.

I, on the other hand, was not left disappointed by my giant slab of sticky toffee pudding with ice cream.

After all of that I almost had to be rolled back to the car but it was so worth it.

The Swan Inn was a really lovely pub with great food but unfortunately the slow service let it down.

Despite having made a reservation, we waited ten minutes before being given a menu and two of our orders were wrong.

After a little while things did pick up but it's always a shame when everyone's left on edge because of poor service, but maybe they were just having a bad day.

Nevertheless I would go back because the food was that good. It's safe to say I'll miss this when I'm back in London...
