Siseng, Paris

Burgers and bao are up there with my favourite foods.

So when I spied pictures of bao burgers circulating Instagram, I knew I had to try Siseng.

I figured that there would be nothing not to like. This combination of my two favourites sounded like my kinda superfood.

Perched on the bank of the Canal St Martin, Siseng offers a selection of Asian fare, ranging from the infamous bao burgers to steaming bowls of noodles and cocktails with a twist.

We went as a big group one Saturday lunch time, so we had to wait for around half an hour for a table.

Once we got seated around one of the big sharing tables, we got down to business.

First up: the chicken bao burger.

Crispy chicken with slaw, confit red peppers and a coconut dressing encased by the fluffiest of buns.

Very moreish and generally great, but I found it a little difficult to get my head around the texture of minced chicken.

Bo bun (not to be confused with bao buns): noodles with curried beef, caramelised nuts, noodles and spring rolls. 

I didn't try this myself but it received rave reviews from the other end of the table.

Having tried both two burgers on separate occasions, I've decided that the beef bao is my favourite. 

Caramelised tamarind sauce, onion tempura, confit onions, spinach and rocket.

All of the best bits of a classic burger but without the post-meal grease guilt.

As for the sides, there isn't a bad one in the bunch.

Sweet potato fries with an unidentifiable but fantastic sweet sesame sauce.

Vegetable tempura to accompany the less aesthetic but no less delicious tofu burger, which was much appreciated by my veggie friend.

You also have to try the prawn croquettes (unpictured), which are next-level delicious.

Siseng sits firmly among my favourite restaurants in Paris.

The food is delicious, the staff are friendly and it won't break the bank- especially if you go midweek, when you can get a burger, fries and drink for 15 euros.

The downside is that it's not a well-kept secret and, like many Paris restaurants, it's definitely not a large space. This combined with limited opening hours means that it's always busy at the weekends, so you'll almost certainly have to queue Friday through Sunday (no list or reservations, unfortunately.)

But if you don't mind waiting, wrap up warm and head over to the 10th for some fab fusion food.
